Criminal Law
Criminal law is the vehicle through which
the state prosecutes alleged perpetrators of a wide variety
of crimes. Crimes litigated by criminal law lawyers include
sex offenses such as rape, date rape, indecent exposure, child
molestation, incest, and sodomy, drug crimes such as selling,
using, or being in the possession of, white collar crimes
such as money laundering, embezzlement, forgery, computer
hacking, and credit card fraud, and violent offenses such
as murder in any degree, robbery, kidnapping, hit and run,
and assault.
Criminal law lawyers defend alleged perpetrators
of crimes such as those enumerated above. Criminal law is
offended every day, so the field that criminal law lawyers
cover is endlessly riddled with criminal law lawsuits. Crime
is not relegated to TV shows, movies, and video games. It
is an ever present reality in the United States and abroad.
The criminal law of the United States developed
over time to detail acts which are repugnant to American society
and to the human conscience. The courts have an ever present
desire to uphold the values, customs, and traditions of America
and protect the citizens of the United States from criminals.
Criminal law differs from civil law because
in civil law lawsuits on compensatory or actual monetary damages
can be sought. But in the criminal law sector, monetary damages
are not the only form of relief typically sought. Prosecutors
almost always seek punishment in the form of punitive damages
such as jail or prison time, and in cases of extreme violence
prosecutors may seek the death penalty.
The Constitution of the United States of America
guarantees those accused of committing crimes the right to
a fair trial. The Directory of Law Firms thus offers criminal
law lawyer listings so that you may research and find adequate
representation in your criminal law lawsuit.
